As a mom, I know how quickly family photos can turn into a whole thing.

You finally get everyone dressed.

Someone can't find a shoe.

One kid suddenly hates the outfit you picked.

Someone is crying.

And somehow, Mom is the one running around trying to make sure everyone else looks happy while secretly thinking, Can we please just get one good picture?!

I've been there.

And that's exactly why I love teaching moms how to take their own family photos.

Not because I think every mom needs to become a photographer.

You Can Save Hundreds of Dollars

Don't get me wrong. I love beautiful professional photography.

But professional family photos can get expensive.

There's the session fee, digital images, prints, outfits, travel, and all the other little expenses that come with getting everyone ready for pictures.

And if you want updated family photos every year, it can really add up.

Learning to take your own photos gives you another option.

Once you learn how to use your camera and find good light, you can take pictures whenever you want.

And Please Don't Stress About Getting "The Perfect Picture"

This is probably the biggest thing I want other mama's to hear.

Your family photos don't have to be perfect.

Your kids don't have to sit perfectly still.

Everyone doesn't have to look at the camera.

You don't have to recreate something you saw on Pinterest.

Let your kids be kids.

Let them laugh.

Let them run.

Let them be silly.

Read a Christmas book together.

Bake cookies.

Decorate the tree.

Put on Christmas pajamas.

Make hot chocolate.

Go outside and play in the snow.

Some of my favorite family pictures aren't the perfectly posed ones.

They're the pictures where nobody was really trying.

The belly laughs.

The little cuddles.

The messy hair.

Those are the pictures you'll want to remember.

And when your family is relaxed, your photos are usually better, too.

Make Taking Pictures Part of the Fun

Instead of announcing, "Okay, everyone! Time for family pictures!"

Try making it something you're already doing.

Turn on the Christmas music.

Make pancakes.

Put everyone in matching—or completely mismatched—pajamas.

Build a gingerbread house.

Snuggle up on the couch.

Then put your camera somewhere nearby and start taking pictures.

You can still get the traditional family photo you need for your Christmas card.

But once you have it?

Keep taking pictures.

That's when the real magic usually happens.

You Don't Have to Understand Your Camera
